The immediate answer
What you need to know
Start with the official France-Visas wizard, complete the online application, then book the appropriate UK submission appointment. The critical legal work comes before submission: selecting the correct route, presenting consistent evidence and coordinating any work, company, property or family issues.
First decide whether a visa is required
A British citizen can usually make a short visit to the Schengen area without a visa, subject to the 90-days-in-180 rule and the permitted purpose of the visit. A stay of more than 90 days, paid work, establishment of a business or another regulated activity can require a different route.
Nationality is only one part of the assessment. UK residents who are not British citizens must check the rules for the passport they hold, their UK residence status and the purpose of travel.
The application sequence from the UK
- 01
Use the France-Visas wizard to identify the likely category and obtain the personalised document list.
- 02
Create the France-Visas account, complete the online form and check that dates, purpose and supporting evidence are consistent.
- 03
Book the submission appointment through the authorised UK service provider. UK residents can currently use London, Manchester or Edinburgh.
- 04
Attend in person when required, submit the application and supporting file, pay the applicable charges and provide biometric data.
- 05
Track the file through the official system and follow the collection or return instructions for the passport.
- 06
If a long-stay visa is issued, check immediately whether it must be validated online or followed by a residence-permit application after arrival.
Timing and appointment planning
France-Visas currently allows applications to be submitted up to 180 days before planned travel. Its UK page advises allowing at least 20 working days, although time at the Consulate is described separately and can vary. Appointment availability, missing documents, additional checks and the visa category can all affect the timetable.
Do not make the entire move depend on the shortest published processing estimate. Employment, school, property, tax and company dates should be planned around a realistic immigration sequence.
When legal review adds value
- More than one visa route appears possible
- The move is connected with a French company, investment or regulated profession
- Income, remote work or self-employment does not fit a standard checklist
- A spouse, child or dependent has a different nationality or status
- There has been a previous refusal, overstay or adverse immigration history
- The evidence must be coordinated with a property, employment or tax workstream
Common questions
Questions people ask before taking the next step
Where is a French visa application submitted in the UK?
France-Visas states that the French Consulate General in London makes the decisions and that the authorised external provider receives applications in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Always use the links provided by France-Visas to avoid appointment scams.
Does a complete file guarantee that the visa will be granted?
No. A complete file is essential, but the competent authority still assesses eligibility and evidence. France-Visas expressly notes that submitting a complete application does not guarantee approval.
Can a lawyer book the appointment or guarantee a faster decision?
A lawyer can help identify the route and prepare a coherent file, but cannot guarantee an appointment, processing time or outcome. Official appointments and decisions remain with the authorised provider and French authorities.
