Geoffroy Canivet

Geoffroy Canivet is a Founding Partner at 186 AVOCATS and a director of 186 London Limited. He advises and represents companies, entrepreneurs, associations, foundations and other organisations in advisory and contentious French-law matters.

His core practice covers contracts and the law of groups, including companies, non-profit organisations and foundations. He works on the agreements and governance questions that support day-to-day activity, structural change and relationships between stakeholders. When a dispute develops, he acts in matters where a prompt and commercially realistic response is important.

The sectors in which Geoffroy works include telecommunications, new forms of real estate, technology and healthcare. His practice also covers sport, entertainment, cinema, leisure and land-related matters. That range reflects the need to understand the operating context of a client rather than treating a contract or dispute in isolation.

Geoffroy began his career at Darrois Villey Maillot Brochier and later worked at BG2V. In 2012, he founded the entity that became 186 AVOCATS. He has since played a central role in the firm’s operations, brand and development, including initiatives in sport, art, corporate services and strategic partnerships.

Earlier in his career, he served in the emergency criminal-defence teams for court-appointed lawyers before divisions of the Paris Court of Appeal. This experience sits alongside his commercial work and contributes to his understanding of urgent instructions, procedure and advocacy.

Geoffroy has advised former Presidents of the Paris Bar and served on the scientific council of the Convention Nationale des Avocats. His teaching has included professional and university programmes concerning advocacy, sport and the business of legal practice.

Alongside his work at 186 AVOCATS, Geoffroy founded 186 SPORT to support new sports projects. His public appointments and memberships include work connected with sports agents, artists and authors, professional tennis and the Paris Bar’s sports-law community.
